What’s not to love when a little history comes with an amazing view?
I’m going to let you in a little gem that a lot of people don’t know about. I’ve mentioned it before, but I haven’t quite talked it up enough yet. Which is why I wanted to dedicate this post to one of my favorite spots in San Francisco.
FORT POINT NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE
Fort Point has become one of my favorite destinations on weekends when I can’t get out of the city. So, I take the long walk from my apartment all the way to the Golden Gate Bridge. And that’s where you’ll find Fort Point, nestled right underneath.
And that’s the beauty of it. Not only is it a lovely walk, but you get amazing views of the bridge, the Bay, and that stunning California coast.
And that’s exactly what I’d recommend if you’re planning to visit. Don’t drive to it. Instead, park near Crissy Field Beach and walk the pathway all the way down to Fort Point. As the Golden Gate Bridge get’s bigger and bigger, make sure to stop and snap a few photos.
Travel Tip: I discovered Fort Point by browsing the #sanfrancisco feed on Instagram. It’s a great way to find unique spots when you travel to new cities.
As the Golden Gate Bridge gets bigger and bigger, make sure to stop and snap a few photos. If you’ve been following me on Instagram, you might notice that it’s one of my favorite bridge shots.
Once you’re there, take a few photos and give Hooper’s Hands a proper high-five. Then, head on into the fort for more surprises.
The first time I went into Fort Pint, it was completely vacant. Which was eerie, but also exhilarating. I walked through each level of the fort, exploring every room that it allowed me. And then, to my surprise, there was one last flight of stairs that opened up to the top roof of the fort. And it kind of takes your breath away. You’re under the Golden Gate Bridge with these amazing panoramic views of the Bay.
I stayed up there for quite awhile. Sitting on the wall, listening to good music and letting the sunshine warm my face. I love those quiet moments that we get to steal every now and then.
If you visit, I hope you get lucky enough to experience it for the first time the way I did.
However, there are fun events planned at the fort as well. For example, the other weekend I walked in only to find myself in the middle of Fort Point Living History Day. It was amazing! They had actors dressed up as Civil War era soldiers, walking around the fort like it was any other day.
So, if you’re planning a weekend in San Francisco, definitely go check out Fort Point. You won’t be disappointed
Let’s go places,
Sarah
