The Lake District is the quintessential English countryside to me. It’s what I was dreaming of and hoping for during my trip to England. Little slate stone villages tucked away into the rolling hills and fells. And that’s what you’ll get when you visit the little English village of Grasmere.

That’s not a typo. Mountains are indeed called fells in The Lake District!

Grasmere is in Cumbria, in the middle of the Lake District National Park. It’s a popular vacation spot due to its central location in the park. But also because it’s been called “The loveliest spot that man hath ever found,” a quote by poet Williams Wordsworth, who like many others poets and novelists, fell in love and was inspired by Grasmere’s beauty.

Pro Tip: Because it’s such a popular destination, Grasmere can get busy. But I went in early October and found it to be just fine.

If you’re making a trip to the Lake District, I highly recommend spending a few days in the village. And to help make you’re planning a little easier, I put together a quick travel guide for Grasmere, England. Enjoy!

6 Things To Do In Grasmere, England

• Check out some local hikes in the area. Several options will take you around Grasmere Lake and even into some of the nearby villages. Check out AllTrails’ Best Walking Trails in Grasmere for a solid list. There’s also a lovely trail right from the village that follows the river.

• Explore the nearby villages of Rydal and Ambleside. While in Ambleside, make sure to check out the Bridge House, which is a little stone house built on a bridge over the Stock Beck River.

• Try the Grasmere gingerbread. The village is known for its gingerbread, which was invented in 1854 by Sarah Nelson, and is still being made in the same cottage yet today. The shop is called Grasmere Gingerbread on Church Stile.

• Pop into all the cute shops and restaurants. Some of my favorites were:
  • Grasmere Tea Gardens
  • Grasmere Garden Village
  • Baldry’s Cafe
  • Grasmere Chocolate Cottage
  • Beck Steps Gallery + Gift Shop

• Explore the Lake District. There are all kinds of tours, routes, and itineraries online that you can check out and find something that works for you. At some point, I’m planning to come back and do exactly this, as I didn’t spend nearly enough time here.

• Check out some of the William Wordsworth landmarks. The English poet has a few points of interest around the village. You have his gravesite at St. Oswald’s Church, the Wordsworth Daffodil Garden, and the nearby Wordsworth Woodland Walk.

4 Places To Stay In Grasmere, England

There are so many cute places to stay in and around Grasmere. To start, here are a few places I’d recommend checking out:

• The Wordsworth Hotel + Spa. A grand country-styled mansion turned hotel, also centrally located right in the village.

• Victorian House. A smaller boutique hotel right in the heart of Grasmere. Dog-friendly!

• The Lancrigg. Nestled just outside Grasmere, this country house hotel sits on 30 acres of gardens and woodlands to enjoy.

• Teal Nook Cottage (via Airbnb): A cozy cottage in Grasmere with a small private garden, private parking, and a sun balcony.
