Here’s a full itinerary of each day I spent exploring Ireland:

Day 4: Experiencing The Cliffs of Moher

The plan for the day was to rise earlyโ€”there was so much packed into the schedule, and I didnโ€™t want to miss a thing! After a quick breakfast at my hotel in Galway, I headed out for the first adventure on the list: a sheepdog demonstration.

I mean, this is Irelandโ€”how could I not?!

The demonstration was absolutely fascinating. The dogs are guided entirely by whistles, not words, and watching them respond to the different whistle sounds was mesmerizing. Afterward, we got to meet the dogs and their trainer, which was a highlight for me (although it did make me miss my own dog, Sully, back home). If you’re visiting Ireland, I highly recommend looking into a sheepdog demonstrationโ€”itโ€™s a truly entertaining and authentic experience that gives you a taste of the countryโ€™s deep connection with its agricultural roots.

Next on the itinerary was one of Irelandโ€™s most iconic landmarksโ€”the Cliffs of Moher. To get there, you drive through Burren National Park, a vast, otherworldly landscape often likened to hiking on the moon. While I didnโ€™t capture any standout photos here, I wanted to mention it because the area is filled with fascinating craggy rock formations, and I think it’s definitely worth exploring more.

And then, we arrived at the majestic Cliffs of Moher. Rising 700 feet above the Atlantic Ocean, these cliffs offer some of the most breathtaking views along the Irish coastline.

I couldnโ€™t have been luckier with the weatherโ€”it was a warm, clear day, which is rare for this often windy spot. The only downside was that much of the trail towards Hags Head was closed for restoration. Iโ€™m sure those sections offered some incredible views, so definitely double-check if any trails are blocked before you go. That said, the views I did get were absolutely unforgettable!

By this point, it was late afternoon, and I still had quite a bit of driving ahead before reaching Killarney, where I was staying for the night. And when I say “quite a bit,” I mean crossing over Irelandโ€™s Wild Atlantic Way by ferry. While the ferry ride wasnโ€™t long, it was my first time being in a vehicle on a ferry, so that was a fun and unique experience!

Finally, I arrived in Killarney and checked into my hotel. After a few hours of much-needed rest, I got ready for dinner at Kate Kearney’s Cottage, where I was treated to a fantastic traditional Irish music and dance performance. The experience was incredible, and Iโ€™d highly recommend it to anyone visiting Killarneyโ€”it’s truly a must-see!

Day 5: Killarney Exploring

Killarney quickly became my favorite stop on the trip. Nestled alongside Killarney National Park, the city offers breathtaking natural beauty at every turn. During my visit, I took a long walk through the park and couldnโ€™t help but envy the locals who can easily run, stroll, or walk their dogs through such a stunning backdropโ€”truly a dream!

One of the highlights of my time in Killarney was taking a jaunting car ride through the national park, which I highly recommend. The ride led us to Ross Castle, where we had time to explore the historic site and take in the incredible views.

I opted for a morning ride, and while the sun was shining, the lingering frost and dew made it feel quite crisp. Thankfully, the jaunting car provided cozy wool blankets, allowing me to stay warm while enjoying the peaceful journey through the park.

After wrapping up my time in the park, it was time to head toward the Ring of Kerry. Unfortunately, I didnโ€™t have enough time to do the entire loop, which takes about 4+ hours if you plan to stop along the way. Instead, I explored a small section, including the famous Moriartyโ€™s store near the Gap of Dunloe and the breathtaking Ladies View panoramic lookout. Even in the brief stretch I covered, there were so many “Wow!” moments.

Before returning to the hotel, I made a stop in the charming village of Kenmare. It was a delightful spot for lunch, a little exploring, and browsing the local shops. If youโ€™re in the area, Kenmare is definitely worth adding to your itinerary!

Places of Interest:

  • Deenagh Lodge โ€“ A charming cottage cafรฉ perfect for breakfast or lunch, set in a cozy and serene atmosphere.
  • Bricรญn Restaurant and Boxty House โ€“ A must-visit for traditional Irish food with an old-lodge vibe.
  • The Laurels Pub & Restaurant โ€“ A pub offering hearty food, ideal for warming up on a chilly Irish day.
  • Cafรฉ du Parc โ€“ A trendy spot for coffee or brunch, combining modern vibes with delicious fare.
  • Muckross House & Abbey โ€“ Just a six-minute drive from Killarney, these stunning historic landmarks are nestled among picturesque mountains and woodlands. Though I didnโ€™t get to visit this time, itโ€™s at the top of my list for a return trip.
  • Torc Waterfall โ€“ A short drive from Killarney, this breathtaking waterfall is perfect for a quick hike. Surrounded by a lush forest, itโ€™s easily accessible and well worth a visit.
  • Reenagross Woodland Park โ€“ If you find yourself in Kenmare, take some time to wander through this tranquil park. Itโ€™s an ideal spot for a peaceful nature escape.

Day 6: Head to Waterford City

After bidding farewell to beautiful Killarney, my next destination was Waterford. Along the way, I made a much-anticipated stop at Blarney Castle to try my luck at kissing the famous Blarney Stone.

This visit turned out to be one of my favorite experiences of the trip. While the castle itself is fairly small, itโ€™s wonderfully picturesque, and the journey to the top is an adventure in itselfโ€”128 steep, spiral stone steps. Arriving early, I avoided the crowds and took a moment to enjoy the incredible views (and catch my breath!) before making my way to the legendary stone.

Kissing the Blarney Stone is no small feat! To do so, you must lie on your back, arch down into a gap in the floor, and plant a kiss on the stoneโ€”believed to grant the gift of eloquence. Itโ€™s a bit nerve-wracking, as youโ€™re leaning backward over a drop, but a helpful attendant holds your legs securely. Between the acrobatics and the thought of all those germs, itโ€™s not for the faint of heart, but they do clean the stone frequently. (Still, I made a quick pass with a napkin after!) Was it worth it? Definitely. Howโ€™s my eloquence holding up? ๐Ÿ˜‰

Afterward, I took a peaceful stroll through the stunning gardens, which were absolutely magical. I also visited Blarney House, a beautiful Scottish Baronial mansion dating back to 1874. Although itโ€™s still privately used part of the year, the house is open for tours when unoccupied. Unfortunately, it wasnโ€™t available to tour during my visit, but its grand exterior alone was well worth the stop.

Hidden Gem Alert! On my way to Waterford, I stumbled upon a charming little pub called Marine Bar. This cozy spot had a welcoming atmosphere, made even better by the live music. I lucked out and got to enjoy a few songs performed by the ownerโ€™s son while sipping on a perfectly poured Guinness.

Once settled in Waterford, a must-see attraction on my list was the House of Waterford Crystalโ€”and it did not disappoint. Their guided tour is a fascinating journey into the art of crystal-making. I walked in assuming that modern technology like precision lasers did all the intricate cutting, but I couldnโ€™t have been more wrong! Each piece is handcrafted by skilled artisans, who train for over seven years to perfect their craft. Watching them work was mesmerizing.

The craftsmanship and artistry on display are truly unbelievable, making the tour an experience Iโ€™d highly recommend. Just be prepared to admire from a distanceโ€”Waterford Crystalโ€™s stunning creations come with equally impressive price tags! (So maybe donโ€™t accidentally knock anything over, either!)

Places of Interest:

  • Dunbrody Abbey – Located 35 minutes from Waterford, this awe-inspiring abbey, founded in 1170, is a must-visit for history buffs + explorers alike. Bonus: There’s a hedge maze and a charming tea room.
  • John F. Kennedy Arboretum – A serene destination dedicated to the memory of President John F. Kennedy, this arboretum is perfect for a family outing or a peaceful solo stroll.

Day 7: Heading Back To Dublin

For my last full day in Ireland, I returned to Dublin to prepare for my flight home the next day. Along the way, I made a stop at the remarkable Kilkenny Castle for a self-guided tour, and I was captivated by its rich history. Once the ancestral home of the Butler family, who owned it for centuries, the castle was eventually sold after financial difficulties forced their hand. Now owned by the city, it has undergone extensive restoration, including repairs after a devastating fire. Thanks to the dedicated efforts of the historical society, the castle has been beautifully restored to reflect its former grandeur, offering visitors a glimpse into its storied past.

Before you go, donโ€™t miss crossing the street to explore the Kilkenny Design Center, a charming building that once served as the castleโ€™s stables but has since been transformed into a hub of shops and cafรฉs. Wandering through its cozy nooks and crannies was a highlight, offering a perfect spot to browse, grab a treat, or soak in the atmosphere before heading out.

That brought me back to Dublin, where I toured the Pearse Lyons Whiskey Distillery, which is set in a beautifully restored 18th-century church. One of the most fascinating details? During renovations, their signature copper stills had to be lifted into place through the church roofโ€”a striking testament to the ingenuity involved in repurposing this historic space.

For my final evening in Ireland, I had dinner at Cleaver Restaurant before turning in early to prepare for the long travel day back to the States.

Places of Interest:

  • Trinity College – Although I didnโ€™t have time to visit, this historic universityโ€”home to the famous Long Room Library + the Book of Kellsโ€”would definitely be at the top of my list if I had an extra day.
  • Temple Bar Area – A district known for its vibrant atmosphere, filled with pubs + shops.
  • The Brazen Head – Dublinโ€™s iconic pub, believed to be one of the oldest in the city, offering great live Irish music every night in a cozy, lantern-lit setting.
  • Whelan’s – Another fantastic venue for live music, styled with a retro, 1950s sitting-room vibeโ€”perfect for a night out.
